Nancy Safley Newman, 85, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025, in Covington, TN. Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 2 PM at Lea & Simmons Funeral Home in Brownsville, TN, with Reverend John Banks and Dr. Lee Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Church Cemetery in Stanton, TN. A visitation will be held from 1 PM until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
Nancy was born on March 19, 1940, to Charles and Elaine Safley in Tallahassee, Florida. She married Nat Newman, and they were married for 61 years, until his death. She was a loving, devoted, and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a member of Covington First United Methodist church. Her love for her Lord and her great faith and joy could be seen on her face as she sang beloved hymns. Her favorite thing to do was to spend time with her family, especially at the beach. She loved her friends and her church family. Nancy was a very talented lady who loved to read, sew, smock, and garden.
She was so proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved to tell of their escapades.
Nancy is survived by one son, Rives Newman (Ashley); two daughters Kathryn Hassell (Joey) and Paige Woods; eleven grandchildren, Charles Woods (Katie), Mary Nelle Jones (Michael), McKenzie Peeler (Huffman), Rachel Gilbert (Chip), Jon, Desi, Jenna, and Savannah Hassell, and Nathan, Shelton, and Carson Newman and 13 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Franklin and Elaine McKenzie Safley, her husband Nathaniel Rives Newman III, her brother, Dr. Charles Franklin Safley, Jr. and her son-in-law, Clyde Woods.
Pallbearers for the service will be Charles Woods, Jon Hassell, Nathan Newman, Carson Newman, Huffman Peeler, Michael Jones, Chip Gilbert and Steele Webb.
The family has requested memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1640, Hagerstown, MD 21741. All arrangements and services are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home.
