Mattie Mae Haynes, born April 16, 1933, in Covington, TN, passed away peacefully at her home on July 5, 2026, at the age of 93. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the Brownsville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Bro. Eddie Martin officiating.
Mattie’s deep devotion to faith, family, and friends guided her throughout her years. She was known for her deep love of Jesus, which inspired her kindness and selflessness. Mattie also treasured her family and neighbors, always extending support, wisdom, and warmth whenever needed.
Mattie is survived by her daughters, Rosa Matthis (Jack) and Dinah Bishop (Wendell), both Brownsville, TN and four step daughters. She is also remembered fondly by her grandchildren: Dwayne Jones (Charisse), Trudy Hughes (Al), Tiffany Finney (Lowe), Mindy Gunther (Mark), Cindy Smith (Brad), and Sha King (Jonathan). She also leaves a legacy of eleven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Each carry with them special memories her strength, generosity, and affection. Mattie is preceded in death by her loving husband, W.B. Haynes; her parents, Warren Allen and Lona Mildred Archer Jones; her son Danny Staggs; her brother Leon Jones; and her sisters Alberta Watson and Hope West.
Over the years Mattie contributed her talents as a dedicated employee at Wells Lamont. Away from work, she found joy in simple pleasures. Mattie enjoyed solving all kinds of puzzles, always seeking new challenges to keep her mind sharp. Her appreciation for music was well-known, with Alan Jackson’s songs often filling her home. She was also a proud supporter of President Donald Trump. Mattie held her personal convictions close to her heart, finding enjoyment and meaning in the things she loved.
Pallbearers for the service are Dwayne Jones, Al Hughes, Brad Smith, Jack Matthis, Mark Gunther and Wendell Bishop.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Dalton Jones, Dylan Jones, Owen Hughes, Andrew Hughes, Harrison Hughes, Lowe Finney and Jonathan King.
Those who knew Mattie best will remember her integrity, her sincere care for others, and her enduring faith. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. The family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association , 1801 West End Ave., Suite 200, Nashville, TN 37203-2510. All arrangements and services are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home.
