Celebration of Life

Matthew Davis, age 57, departed this earthly life on February 2, 2025, in Cape Girardeau, MO at Saint Francis Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 12:00 Noon, at the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home with Pastor Wilbert Atkins officiating.  Burial will follow at Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Brownsville, TN. Matthew was born on March 14, 1967, in Haywood County, TN as the beloved son of Mr. Richard D. (R.D.) Davis and Mrs. Jossie Lee Davis. He was baptized at an early age at Mercer Baptist Church. Additionally, he was educated in the Haywood County School system where he was a proud 1985 Haywood High School graduate.

A true people’s person, Matthew never met a stranger. His energetic spirit, wit, and love for conversation made him a joy to be around. Whether sharing stories, telling jokes, or singing along to his favorite music, he filled every room with laughter and light. He had a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life—strong coffee, an ice-cold Coca-Cola, and gathering around the table with family and friends to eat a delicious Southern style meal. Also, he really loved to travel in his younger years, so he was known to book plane or train reservations on very short notice.

Matthew spent years working in the manufacturing industry, and he lived in Milwaukee, WI, for several years before returning to Tennessee and later settling in Missouri. Through every chapter of his life, he remained connected to those he loved through conversation or a kind word.

He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Richard D. Davis and four siblings, Earl Lee Brown, Margie Davis Dowell, Martha Davis King, and Richard Frank Davis whom he cherished and missed dearly. He leaves behind a legacy of love and memories in the hearts of his surviving family and friends, including his mother, Mrs. Jossie Lee Davis of Brownsville, TN., his brother, Roy Floyd Davis (Sherrie) of Antioch, TN, his sister, Dr. Jeanette Davis of Brownsville, TN., his sister Shirley Ruth Davis of Decatur, IL., his nephew Trebian Davis of Antioch, TN., his nephew, Frenchie Anthony Davis of Sikeston, MO., and his aunt Geneva Woods of Milwaukee, WI.

He also leaves behind his aunt, Jearlean Sykes of Milwaukee, WI., his aunt Hattie Currie of Brownsville, TN., his aunt Idella Walker of Brownsville, TN, his aunt Dora Mann (William) of Brownsville, TN., his uncle Howard Davis of Milwaukee, WI., his aunt Christine Pewett (Sam) of Owensboro, KY., his uncle Zack Walker of Milwaukee, WI., his uncle John D. Walker (Martina) of Chicago, IL., his uncle Donnell Walker of Chicago, IL., and a host of cousins and other relatives.

Though his time with us was too short, Matthew leaves behind a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His laughter, energetic spirit, and dedication to doing things his way will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Matthew. You will be deeply missed, but your memory, smile, and laughter will live in our hearts forever.
