Mary Porter Mitchell, born on October 25, 1939, left this world on July 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Throughout her eighty-six years, Mary’s warmth, steadfast devotion, and abundant talents touched everyone who knew her, leaving a lasting legacy of care, kindness, and faith. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the First Assembly of God Church with Pastor John Barnes, Pastor Timothy VanDouser, Jr. and Steve Mitchell officiating and speaking. Burial will follow at the Brownsville Memorial Gardens in Brownsville, TN. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM, at the First Assembly of God Church.
Mary’s life was one marked by dedication to her family and to the values she held dear. As a devoted Pastor’s wife, she supported her husband with unwavering commitment, fostering a home that was open, welcoming, and grounded in faith. Together, they navigated the joys and challenges of life, finding purpose in service and strength in one another.
A cornerstone of her family, Mary poured her heart into her role as a homemaker. She created a nurturing and loving environment for her children, Mary is survived by her daughter: Stephanie VanDouser (Tim) of Millington, TN; her sons: Steven Mitchell (Ellen) of Memphis, TN, Jonathan Mitchell (Lesa) and Gary Mitchell (Kendra) both of Mooreland, OK; her brother, Joe Henry Porter (Mary) of Texarkana, TX; her sister: Barbara Porter Mitchell (Travis Ray) of Lewisville, AR; as well as a legacy of thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Her wisdom, gentle humor, and boundless love shaped their lives and continue to inspire them daily.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Gary W. Mitchell; her parents, Joseph Aubrey and Opal Idell Wesson Porter; brothers Donald Albert Porter and John Doyle Porter; sisters Frances Maxine Bright and Sandra Lee Mitchell; and her beloved grandchild, Chance Mitchell.
Talented and creative, Mary’s joy in music was evident to all who knew her. She was a gifted piano player, gracing countless family gatherings with her music. Her skills as a seamstress were equally remarkable. Mary’s love for books revealed a curious mind and a gentle spirit, always eager for the next story to unfold. Traveling gave Mary endless joy, in fact, she had traveled to all fifty of the United States.
Pallbearers for the service will be Timothy VanDouser, Jr., Mitchell VanDouser, Jack VanDouser, Ryan Mitchell, Conner Mitchell and Garrett Mitchell.
Mary’s presence will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but the love, faith, and joy she cultivated will endure as her greatest legacy. Her life was a testament to love, service, and faith. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who loved her. All arrangements and services are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home.
