Juanita Opal Thomas, a cherished matriarch and remarkable individual, was born on April 5, 1935, in Brownsville, Tennessee. After a life defined by love, resilience, and the unwavering commitment to her family, she passed away peacefully at her home in Humboldt, Tennessee, on July 9, 2025. With a heart that knew no limits, Juanita leaves a legacy of profound impact on all who had the privilege to know her.

In her early years, Juanita dedicated herself to the noble profession of midwifery, assisting countless families during one of life’s most significant moments. Her compassion and expertise made her a trusted figure in her community, providing care and support with grace and professionalism. Following this fulfilling chapter, she embarked on a lengthy career with AT&T, where she served diligently as a phone operator for an impressive 44 years before her retirement.

A graduate of Haywood County High School in 1953, Juanita embraced life with an adventurous spirit. Memories abound of her delightful youth, including an exciting skating party featuring the legendary Elvis Presley, a moment etched in the hearts of those who attended. Additionally, in her early years, she showcased her boldness as a racecar driver, competing in numerous bouts that reflected her competitive drive and zest for life. Her unforgettable experiences in these realms served as a testament to her vibrant personality and love for adventure.

As a member of the Red Hat Society, she reveled in the camaraderie and joy of friendship, embodying the society's ethos of embracing life's fun and frivolities. Juanita was also known for her endearing love of retail therapy, providing her with happiness as a devoted QVC shopaholic. Her home was adorned with her cherished collections of elephants and angels, symbols of her nurturing spirit and those she held dear.

At the core of her existence were the familial bonds she held dear. Juanita was a proud mother to her son, David Byon Thomas Jr. of Humboldt, TN, and a doting matriarch to her four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. In her eyes, their happiness and achievements were her proudest accomplishments, a source from which she drew immeasurable joy.

Though her earthly journey has come to a close, her spirit continues to live on through her loved ones. She is predeceased by her father, Lewis Monroe Johnson; her mother, Minnie Mitchell Johnson; her beloved daughter, Renee Taylor; her brothers, John William “Johnny” Johnson and her twin brother, Walter Johnson, and Lewis G. "Tootsie" Johnson; her sister, Evelyn Blurton; and her cherished granddaughter, Amy Dinkins, and grandson, Jimmy Dinkins.

Friends and family are invited to gather in celebration of her life. Visitation will take place at Bells Funeral Home in Bells, Tennessee, on July 13, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service beginning at 2:00 PM. She will then be laid to rest at Providence Cemetery in Jackson, Tennessee, at 3:15 PM.

Juanita Opal Thomas was a beacon of love, kindness, and light who touched many lives. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
