Jimmy “BBQ Buck” Buchanan

May 20, 1942 – August 5, 2025

Jimmy “BBQ Buck” Buchanan, 83, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, passed away on August 5, 2025, surrounded by love. Born on May 20, 1942, in Crockett County, TN, to John D. and Myrtle Buchanan, Jimmy lived a full and colorful life that touched everyone he met.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Louise Turner, Buddy Buchanan, and Billie Jean Turner; children Ricky Buchanan and Wesley Buchanan and one grandson Joshua Buchanan. He is survived by his brother JD Buchanan (Jewell); children John Ashley (Kim), Christi Bartlett, Bradley Buchanan, and Bobby Buchanan; grandchildren Kara Miller (Nathan), Brandon Sweat, Danielle Cowden (Tyler), Morgan Horton (Forrest), Hannah Tilson (Zach), Caleb Buchanan, Haley Reagan, Brittney Buchanan, Ashley Buchanan Shea (James), Shelbi Holmes (Vincent), Beau Buchanan, Brianna Buchanan, and Bradley Buchanan; numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews who all adored him.

A true jack-of-all-trades, Jimmy’s greatest passion was cooking. He served as pit master at Hog Heaven in Dyersburg, TN, before working alongside his daughter as pit master at Halihannigan’s Café. His barbecue was legendary, and his love for sharing a good meal was only matched by his love for people.

Jimmy had a zest for life that was impossible to ignore. He loved dancing, honky-tonks, country music, church, cooking and eating, and classic Pontiac or Buick cars—famously saying if he couldn’t have one of those, he’d rather walk. His larger-than-life personality drew people in instantly, and to know him was to love him.

As Jimmy once put it: “I’ve been all around the United States, seen just about everything, been married four times, and had a freaking (not the word he used) blast!”

The family will announce memorial arrangements at a later date. They would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Pamela Sweat for being with Jimmy until the very end. He will be terribly missed but forever remembered
