James E. Vandiver, Jr., age 67, a dedicated family man and retired United States Navy serviceman, passed away on February 3, 2026, at Baptist Hospital in Collierville, Tennessee. Born August 26, 1958, in Memphis, Tennessee, James’ life was a testament to his unwavering devotion to family, service, and the many friendships he cherished throughout his life.

James proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 20 years, retiring as a Boatswain’s Mate First Class. His military service reflected his strong work ethic, leadership, and commitment to others, qualities that remained evident throughout his life.

Following his naval career, James worked at Precision Coils as a special parts maker, where he was respected for his craftsmanship, reliability, and willingness to help those around him. His warm personality and sense of humor made a lasting impression on coworkers and friends alike.

Family meant everything to James. He loved family trips to the mountains, time spent with his brother, and the special tradition of Brother’s Day that created lifelong memories. He also shared a deep bond with his best friend, Russell Yates, whose friendship meant a great deal to him.

A proud Tennessee Titans fan, James enjoyed music, hunting, fishing, and spending time out on his boat, along with gardening and caring for animals. These passions reflected his love for the outdoors and the simple joys of life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Christine Vandiver; sons Jason Daniel Vandiver of Somerville, Tennessee, and Scott Mogilefski of Orangeville, Utah; daughters Jamie R. Byrum (Samuel) and Jessica L. Garland, both of Somerville, Tennessee; brother Charlie Joe Vandiver (Donna) of Atoka, Tennessee; and six grandchildren who brought him tremendous pride and happiness.

James was preceded in death by his parents, James Ernest Vandiver, Sr. and Mary Katherine Woodruff Vandiver, and his brother, William George Vandiver.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 13, 2026, from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Lea & Simmons Funeral Home in Brownsville, Tennessee, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM at the same location.

Those who knew James will remember his kindness, steady presence, loyalty, and the love he freely shared. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the friendships he nurtured, and the many lives he touched.

The family requests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142. All arrangements and services are under the direction of Lea & Simmons Funeral Home.
