Gordon Perry, a dedicated educator, coach, and respected leader, passed away peacefully at home on September 7, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on December 17, 1936, in Tigrett, TN, Gordon's life was a testament to his commitment to service, both in education and community. A Memorial Visitation will be held at the John B. Hooper Memorial Stadium next to the Gordon Perry Field House, in Brownsville, TN, on Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Another visitation will take place at the First United Methodist Church in Brownsville, TN, on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, prior to a Memorial Service that will begin at 11:00 AM.
Gordon's journey in education began after he graduated from Boca Ciega High School in St. Petersburg, FL, in 1955, where he excelled in football, baseball, and track. He went on to attend Murray State University, making his mark as a standout athlete by lettering in football for four years and track for two. He earned both his BS and MA degrees, along with his ROTC Commission, which led to significant military service.
He served two years in the Army at Fort Bragg, NC, in the 82nd Airborne Division and continued his dedication to service for 19 years in the Army Reserve and National Guard, notably being activated for Desert Storm from 1989 to 1990.
Gordon's coaching career started in Cadiz, KY, where he served as the head football and track coach for three years. In 1966, he relocated to Brownsville, TN, where he took on the role of assistant football and head track coach. By 1969, he transitioned into administration, becoming the principal of Haywood High School in 1977, a position he held until his retirement in 1999. Under his leadership, Haywood High School was recognized as one of the ten best high schools in the state in 1988 and achieved recognition from the U.S. Department of Education as a school of excellence in 1986. He was honored to be inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame and the Boca Ciega High School Hall of Fame, reflecting his immense contributions to education and athletics.
Gordon earned respect by giving respect. Known for being strict, he was nonetheless one of the most well-liked and respected principals to walk the halls of Haywood High School, leaving a lasting impact on students and faculty alike.
Gordon is survived by his sons, Kevin Perry (Cindy) of Humboldt, TN, and Shane Perry of Bentonville, AR; stepsons, Bill Currie (Julia) and Allen Currie (Cindy) of Brownsville, TN; and stepdaughter, Cathy Powell (Mark) of Jackson, TN. He is also survived by his brother, Allen "Buddy" Perry (Linda) of Cadiz, KY; sister, Nancy Bingol of Virginia Beach, VA; sister-in-law, Betty Crenshaw of Yalaha, FL; 14 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Crenshaw Perry; brothers, Bill Perry, Elliott "Sonny" Perry, Ben "Peewee" Perry, Jim Perry, and Tommy Perry; and sisters, Sally Glennan and Mary Catherine Perry.
The family wishes to acknowledge the care and compassion of his caregivers, Mary Ann Davis, Pat Culp, and Audrey Dornan. Their dedication to his care and well-being is greatly appreciated.
Gordon Perry's legacy of dedication, leadership, and compassion will continue to inspire all who had the honor of knowing him. His contributions to education and the countless lives he touched will be remembered and cherished by family, friends, and the community he served so well. The family requests that memorials be made to the Marla Angotti Youth or Teachers on Mission through the First United Methodist Church, 117 E. Franklin, St., Brownsville, TN 38012. All arrangements and services are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home.
