A person of uncommon intellect and multifaceted interests, Dixie had a baby grand piano in her Jack’s Creek home and horses in her stable. An accomplished, highly trained classical pianist Dixie poured herself into the education of college students. For 36 years she taught at Freed-Hardeman in Henderson, Tennessee, retiring as Associate Professor of Music and Interdisciplinary Studies in 2006.
Dixie was conversant in five languages, including Japanese and German, and had a deep appreciation for ancient and modern art, archaeology, and literature. Travels took her across the world.
From her early years Dixie loved horses; in adulthood she participated across the Southeast in dressage competitions where her horses won over one hundred ribbons.
Dixie was born March 8, 1941, in Washington D.C., to the late Bill and Margaret (Boss) Harvey. Her memories of that city were warm and happy. In her adolescent years she moved to Augusta, Georgia, with her parents and her late brother Bill.
The Church of Christ was a primary spiritual, educational and career influence in Dixie’s life from childhood. After graduation from David Lipscomb College in Nashville, TN, Dixie earned a master’s degree in music from Indiana University School of Music and a Ph.D. in music from the University of North Texas.
Dixie is survived by four first cousins, 2 nieces, loving members of her church, friends and peers and a host of former students.
Contributions in Dixie’s memory can be given to the North Jackson Church of Christ, Jackson TN, or to the Alta Frances Boss Memorial Music Scholarship Fund at Freed-Hardeman University, Henderson, TN.
Special gratitude is given to Elder Doug Hays, who often visited with and prayed with Dixie, for the North Jackson Church of Christ for graciously, consistently extending the love of Christ, and to the staff of Maplewood Healthcare Center, where Dixie lived the last four years.
