Bertha Mae Sweat

Bertha Mae Sweat, age 93, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at her residence in Brownsville, TN.  Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday, April 15, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Brownsville Funeral Home in Brownsville, TN.  Burial will follow at the Brownsville Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be held on Monday, April 15, 2024, from 12 noon until 2:00 PM at the Brownsville Funeral Home. 

Bertha Mae Sweat was born on October 5, 1930, in Haywood County, to Ezra Arch Cash and Ida Bell Cashion Cash.  At the age of 16, she helped raise and care for her siblings prior to getting married.  She will long be remembered as one who was an amazing cook and one that found great pleasure in taking care of others.  She babysat for over 26 years.  During her younger years, she would ride the train to other towns during the week to take care of people.  She was also known as the “pie lady” who blessed others with her coconut pies, chocolate pies, and fried pies. Everyone loved her, and she knew no strangers.  The true joy in her life was loving and caring for her own family.  She was greatly loved, and she will be greatly missed.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Rayburn Sweat; her parents, Ezra Arch Cash and Ida Bell Cashion Cash; two sons, Bobby Sweat and Howard Sweat; three brothers, John Cash, Henry Cash, and Larry Cash; one sister, Sue Sweat, and one son-in-law, Felix Robertson. 

She is survived by two sons, Ricky Sweat (Betty) and Charlie Sweat (Alonda); three daughters, Janet Robertson, Penny Walker, and Patricia Ann Williams (Jackie); one daughter-in-law, Edna Sweat; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-grandson on the way, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

Pallbearers for the service will be Ryan Walker, Bradley Harwell, Joe Sweat, Phillip Sweat, Richard Sweat, and Jonathan Cain.  Everett Cain will serve as the Honorary Pallbearer.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. All services and arrangements are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home in Brownsville, TN.
