Agnes Ray Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed from this world on October 1, 2025, in Brownsville, Tennessee, at the age of 92. Born on August 16, 1933, in Helena, Arkansas, Agnes carried with her the warmth of her upbringing, graduating from Sacred Heart of Helena, Arkansas. Throughout her life, she embodied a spirit of resilience and love that touched all who knew her.
Agnes dedicated nearly a decade of her career as a forklift driver at Eaton Axel in Humboldt, TN, an endeavor she approached with diligence and dedication. Her journey continued as she took on the role of a cafeteria worker at Haywood Elementary School, where her connection to the community deepened. Mrs. Agnes loved the kids at the school and was always there to do that "little extra", whether it was just a needed hug or to sneak money to those that needed it for ice cream. She filled the hearts and bellies of many by owning and operating the Dairy Kreme of Gadsden. This vibrant establishment became a cherished gathering place for the children of Gadsden, who delighted in their time spent there, playing pinball machines and enjoying lively music from the jukebox. Agnes was often seen making her signature chocolate milkshakes at the Dairy Kreme and bringing treats to the school, much to the pleasure of her young-adult audience.
A woman of profound love, Agnes viewed her family as everything. She often shared her belief that “the secret to life is to fall seven times and to get up eight times,” a mantra that spoke to her indomitable spirit. Though she was the last surviving of her twelve siblings, her legacy is distinctly present in the love and strength she imparted to her family.
Agnes is survived by her devoted sons, Paul Smith (Kathy), Thomas Smith, and Patrick Smith (Sherry). She leaves behind her cherished daughter, Kathy Mathis (Allen), along with 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Her countless nieces and nephews, extended family members, and numerous friends will carry forth the memories and joys she so generously shared.
Agnes is preceded in death by her parents, Sam Saia and Grace Maggio Saia; her husband of over 58 years, John Thomas Smith Jr.; her granddaughter Ashley Redmond; and her twelve brothers and sisters, all of whom now welcome her with open arms.
